Lockups during a windows install normally means something is failing. Do a memory test first and see if that all checks out. Try doing one stick at a time if there is more than one. For old (and new) laptop the best choice is xubuntu, Ubuntu mate or Linux Mint Cinnamon. Windows XP il too much old and bad.
